I got an e-mail from a friend this morning saying he's found my list of movie recommendations really valuable lately. This inspired me to add links to the trailers for all my 5-star movies. I hope others will find this list useful as well...
This is a conversation from Facebook. My philosopher friend Stephan Pernar joined the group called "Corporations are not people." In response I asked: What essential difference does it make whether corporations "are" people, when they are composed of people? Seeking insight into the basis of your position. I'm probably neutral on the subject itself but wary of people "sticking it" to corporations as though that were not "sticking it" to people who own the corporation. He replied: "My main critique is that corporations are pursuing essentially non-human goals (monetary gain) with super human ability. This leads to a dynamic that skews interactions ...
Thanks to Andrew for the heads-up about this guy. Judging from this video, he seems to be well-spoken, classy, and promoting values I can agree with.
John does an excellent job, here, of explaining the theme he's been promoting in recent years. I particularly like what he conveys in the first few minutes. I'm more ambivalent about the idea of businesses having "responsibilities" to the community, since it seems one-sided to me; it is not clear to me that businesses have any more obligation to the community than communities have to businesses. So why emphasize one over the other? At the same time, I do think that if I owned a business such as Whole Foods, I would be looking for ways to use our massive influence to ...
Hilarious. The Daily Show With Jon StewartMon - Thurs 11p / 10c
Lately I've become very interested in the subject of monetary inflation. It's well worth boning up on the subject today, because it sounds like inflation will be coming back with a vengeance, starting sometime in the next year or two. Last week's article "Inflation Nation" in the New York Times, by financial historian Allan Meltzer, is one of the best I've seen on the subject. (Thanks to Greg Feirman for e-mailing the link.) Here are a few choice paragraphs: It doesn’t help that the administration’s stimulus program is an obstacle to sound policy. It will create jobs at the cost of an enormous ...
This response to Jon Stewart by Bill Whittle is so incredibly good that I decided to become a paid PJTV subscriber, strictly to help support their new business model. (If you've not seen the full exchange between Jon Stewart and Cliff May, it's well worth watching, just to get a handle on the depth of Stewart's intellectual skew. Aside from claiming Harry Truman is a war criminal -- for which he later apologized without much explanation of why it warranted apology -- he also asserts that the Geneva Convention should protect terrorists. His lack of historical context is staggering, especially ...
Drudge has had two headlines today that are just delicious together. First, we learn that the Department of Homeland Security has sent out a nine-page document warning local law enforcement officers that the economic recession, the election of the first black president, and the return of a few disgruntled war veterans could lead to a resurgence of right-ring extremists. Here's the best part: A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines "rightwing extremism in the United States" as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of ...
A great video from Reason.tv.
After my post "Where is OUR Daniel Hannan?" I looked up Hannan on YouTube to see what else he's been up to, besides his regular blog on the Telegraph web site. I appears the public flogging he administered to Gordon Brown has turned him into a rising star among free market advocates. His comments spoke for many people's concerns, have resonated widely, and are causing important people to stand up and take note. Take a look at these clips from Hannan's recent TV appearances on Fox News. Here's Daniel Hannan being interviewed by Neil Cavuto: And Part II of the same interview: And ...
