Natural Treatment for Seasonal Allergies

May 14, 2005 · Filed under: Health, Personal

A new article on Fox News provides an oh-so-original suggestion for how to treat seasonal allergies: try taking Allegra or Claritin.

Myself, I’ve been using Flonase off and on for the past few years, and it works very well with only minor side-effects.

But I’ve also discovered something even more interesting. If I simply drink a lot of water, that itself can dramatically reduce my allergy symptoms.

Kathy read the book Your Body’s Many Cries for Water a few years ago, and taught me that the body produces more histimines (i.e., the precursor to allergy symptoms) when your sinuses are dry. Hence, drinking water can often curb the symptoms of seasonal allergies.

The first year I tried this, my allergies were completely alleviated by drinking 32 ounces (about 4 glasses) of water each day, first thing in the morning.

Since then, water has been a reliable way of curbing my allergies, albeit not always as effective as the first year. I typically take Flonase for a few days each year, at the peak of allergy season, and drinking water takes care of me during the other days.

I like knowing that I’m treating my allergies with something natural rather than with pharmaceuticals, and I am often troubled that doctors don’t prescribe such natural remedies more often, instead of relying so heavily on pharmaceuticals.
