SpamArrest Trial

May 9, 2003 · Filed under: Personal, Reviews

This afternoon I broke down and signed up for SpamArrest. Check out the demo of how it works!

This allows me to revive my preferred e-mail address, joshua at zader.com, which I had used for years, but then finally had to shut down in early 2002 due to the bucketloads of spam I was getting—and the fact that conventional spam filtering software seems to be inherently unreliable.

The setup went smoothly and, so far, the SpamArrest service seems good. (I’ll post an update to this entry later, after I’ve had time to form a more experienced opinion.)

UPDATE (5/17/03) – I just saw an article on SamSpade.org which says that SpamArrest is spamming. This strikes me as one of those stupid business moves that is going to be so swiftly and elegantly punished (through loud protestations and probably some loss of business share) that I don’t even need to get upset. They’ll stop engaging in acts that their primary customer base detests, and I can go on benefiting from their highly effective anti-spam service. I wouldn’t think of switching unless someone else developed a similar model that was at least as effective!

UPDATE: (10/12/03) – Finally terminated my SpamArrest account (before it expired) because I’m sick of having to sift through pages and pages of spam to ferret out the inevitable handful of legitimate senders who don’t respond to the confirmation request. Plus, the SpamArrest server has had a ridiculous amount of down-time lately.
